Following the coldest night of the season, Srinagar endured another frigid day with temperatures plummeting to minus 4.3°C, maintaining the icy conditions in the Kashmir Valley on Monday.

An official from the meteorological department in Srinagar reported that the temperature was 1.9°C below the normal range for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The official mentioned that Srinagar had witnessed a minimum temperature of minus 5.6°C the previous night.

Qazigund registered a minimum temperature of minus 4.2°C, slightly higher than the minus 5.0°C recorded on the previous night. This was 1.1°C below the average for this gateway town to Kashmir, according to the meteorological official.

Pahalgam reported a low of minus 5.3°C compared to the previous night’s minus 6.5°C, showing a deviation of 1.7°C above the typical range for this renowned resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, situated in south Kashmir as well, saw a minimum of minus 2.1°C, up from the previous night’s minus 2.7°C. The temperature was 1.9°C above the norm for this location, as stated by the official.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir documented a low of minus 5.0°C, slightly cooler than the minus 5.3°C recorded on the previous night, with a deviation of 2.3°C below the average.

Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 4.0°C, showing a slight increase from the minus 4.4°C of the previous night. The temperature was 3.8°C above the typical range for this location.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 4.3°C, down from 3.4°C the previous night, marking a deviation of 3.1°C below the average for the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Banihal reported a low of minus 1.2°C, Batote 3.2°C, and Bhaderwah 0.4°C, according to the official.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh winter period that extends until January 30. However, the conclusion of this period does not mark the end of winter. It is succeeded by a 20-day stretch called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19 and a 10-day period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.

The meteorological official predicted generally cloudy weather with a possibility of light rain/snow over “extreme isolated higher reaches” on January 9. From January 10-15, generally dry weather is anticipated. The official added that no significant weather activity is expected until January 15.
