Kashmir Boosts Cancer Care: Chemotherapy Services Launched in District Hospitals
Authorities have declared the initiation of chemotherapy services at each district hospital in the Kashmir division as part of a concerted effort to fortify healthcare infrastructure and enhance accessibility to critical cancer care.An official from the health department emphasized that this decision underscores the government’s dedication to tackling the increasing burden of cancer, ensuring that patients, regardless of their location, have access to essential treatment options.
The objective is to decentralize cancer care, bringing it closer to communities and reducing the necessity for patients to undergo long journeys for chemotherapy.”The government is committed to enhancing the overall health and well-being of its citizens, and the launch of chemotherapy services at the district level marks a significant shift in healthcare strategy,” stated the official.

This move acknowledges the pivotal role of early intervention and treatment in the battle against cancer. As part of the initiative, specialized chemotherapy units equipped with all necessary facilities and staffed by trained healthcare professionals will be established.
These units will offer a variety of chemotherapy treatments tailored to address the diverse needs of cancer patients. Recognizing the importance of early detection and treatment in cancer care, the initiative is anticipated to markedly reduce waiting times for treatment, ensuring that patients receive timely and comprehensive care.
This strategic move is expected to alleviate the burden on larger medical centers, allowing them to focus on more intricate cases and specialized treatments,” added the official.Substantial funding has been allocated by the government for the procurement of medical equipment, staff training, and infrastructure development to seamlessly integrate chemotherapy services into district hospitals.
The initiative, already implemented in some district hospitals with trained staff, aims to significantly improve cancer outcomes and contribute to a healthier population.Concurrently, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir has issued a circular instructing Chief Medical Officers and Medical Superintendents to launch chemotherapy services in all district hospitals.
According to the circular, these health authorities have been directed to utilize the services of trained staff and provide chemotherapy using approved National Health Mission (NHM) funds for the activity under the National Program for Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) program at their respective centers, prioritizing the matter to prevent patient suffering.
