Karnataka Health Minister: No Immediate Restrictions Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases
Amid the increasing COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao offered reassurance to the public, indicating that the current risk factor remains low and emphasizing that there are no existing restrictions.
Gundurao stressed that the virus’s impact on people’s health is not severe, encouraging citizens not to panic. He explicitly stated that there are no constraints on movement, travel, or public gatherings at present. However, he advised individuals aged 60 and above to be cautious, especially in crowded areas, suggesting the use of masks for added protection.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah echoed similar sentiments, urging people not to panic and emphasizing the importance of taking precautions to mitigate risks. Out of the total detected cases, the CM highlighted that a significant majority were quarantined at home, with only a few requiring hospitalization.
The recent surge in cases has been attributed to the JN.1 sub-strain, characterized by mild fever and cough, prevalent in numerous countries and associated with 16 recent deaths. Presently, the country’s active COVID-19 cases stand at 2,669.
In response to the escalating situation, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting, stressing the need for vigilance against emerging strains of the virus. He urged states to enhance surveillance and ensure adequate stocks of medical supplies and vaccines.
Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the evolving nature of the virus, urging member states to maintain robust surveillance and share genomic sequences to effectively monitor and respond to emerging variants.
