Karachi Ranks Seventh Most Polluted City Amidst Poor Air Quality

Amidst deteriorating air quality, Karachi has been ranked as the seventh most polluted city globally, as per ARY News on Sunday. The Air Quality Index indicates Karachi’s air pollution level at 163 PM (Particulate matter), posing health risks to residents.

    Health Concerns and Recommendations

Health experts have deemed Karachi’s air quality “very unhealthy” and advise residents to limit outdoor activities, particularly during peak pollution hours. An Air Quality Index level of 151-200 is considered unhealthy, while readings surpassing 200 pose even greater risks, with levels beyond 300 being exceptionally hazardous.

    Winter Challenges and Pollution Sources

During winter, the air becomes denser, causing harmful particles to descend lower in the atmosphere, thus exacerbating pollution levels. This seasonal phenomenon results in a layer of contaminated particles, including carbon and smoke, enveloping the region. Industrial emissions, coal combustion, waste burning, and vehicle exhaust contribute to air pollution, persisting throughout the winter season.

    Impact of Southwestern Winds

While southwestern winds from the sea typically act as a natural air filter for Karachi, they remain largely ineffective during winter months, exacerbating pollution levels. Despite their potential to mitigate pollution, these winds remain suspended, allowing pollutants to accumulate and worsen air quality.

The alarming rise in pollution underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address environmental concerns and safeguard public health in Karachi.
