Kagiso Rabada Reaches Landmark 500 Wickets in International Cricket

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada etched his name in cricket history on Tuesday, joining an elite group of only seven bowlers from his country to secure 500 wickets in international cricket. This significant milestone was achieved during the first Test clash between India and South Africa at Centurion.

Rabada, 28, showcased his sheer dominance on the field, concluding the initial day’s play with exceptional figures of 5/44 from 17 overs at an economy rate of 2.58. His ferocious spell included the dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Shardul Thakur.

Having played in 218 international matches, Rabada has now claimed 500 wickets at an impressive average of 24.79 and a strike rate of 35.19. His best bowling figures stand at 7/112.

While Shaun Pollock holds the highest tally of international wickets for Proteas (823), Rabada has accumulated 285 wickets in 61 Tests at an average of 22.10, ranking as the seventh-highest wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests. His performance in 101 ODIs has yielded 157 wickets at an average of 27.77, ranking ninth among the Proteas’ leading ODI wicket-takers. In addition, Rabada has secured 58 wickets in 56 T20Is for South Africa.

As for the match against India, the Proteas bowlers troubled the Indian side, reducing them to 24/3. However, a partnership between Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, followed by a resilient display from KL Rahul (70*), helped India recover to 208/8 by the end of day one. Notable contributions also came from Shardul Thakur.

Nandre Burger (2/50) and Marco Jansen (1/52) made vital contributions to the South African bowling attack during the day’s play.
