Modi’s Unfulfilled Promises and Ladakh’s Statehood Demand

Ramesh pointedly questioned Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to promises made in the BJP’s 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto and the 2020 Ladakh Hill Council Polls regarding Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He challenged the Prime Minister to uphold his pledges and address the longstanding issue of Ladakh’s constitutional safeguards, including statehood.

Criticism of Modi Government’s Policies in Ladakh

The Congress leader criticized the Modi government’s decision to designate Ladakh as a separate Union Territory without a legislative assembly, lamenting the absence of consultation with local stakeholders. Ramesh also accused the government of negligence in addressing Chinese encroachment in Ladakh’s Changthang plains, alleging contradictory statements regarding the border situation.

Concerns Over Ladakh Industrial Land Allotment Policy

Ramesh raised concerns about the proposed Ladakh Industrial Land Allotment Policy 2023, highlighting its lack of representation from local councils, civil society groups, and panchayat representatives in single-window clearance committees. He questioned the absence of environmental and cultural criteria in assessing industrial projects, suggesting potential favoritism toward industrial interests over local communities.
