J-k Takes Proactive-Steps Against New COVID-Variant: Health Secretary Issues Directives for Enhanced Preparedness
The administration of Jammu and Kashmir issued instructions on Wednesday, urging all concerned parties to proactively gear up for potential scenarios related to the new COVID-19 variant circulating in the country, according to an official statement.
Health and Medical Education Secretary Bhupinder Kumar, who conducted a review of the COVID-19 situation and the state of readiness of the public health system across the Union Territory, provided the directives. While there have been no reported cases of the JN.1 variant in Jammu and Kashmir, a meeting was convened in response to the recent advisory from the Union Health Ministry regarding the emergence of the new variant.
During the meeting, Kumar instructed all department heads and chief medical officers to activate COVID-19 testing facilities, conduct extensive testing in accordance with the revised surveillance strategy, and diligently report cases of Influenza-like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) while adhering to recommended testing protocols.

To ensure operational preparedness, Kumar directed department heads to regularly conduct mock drills to assess the functionality of oxygen generation plants. The statement also highlighted the importance of reassessing the readiness of all facilities to handle potential challenges effectively.
