J-K Government Signs 2500 MW-Power Deals to Double Capacity; Focus on Smart Metering and System Revamp
Authorities have reported that the Jammu and Kashmir government, during the ongoing fiscal year, has entered into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for 2500 MW with the goal of doubling the existing power capacity.
A high-level meeting convened under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy, R K Singh, and Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha reviewed the power sector of J&K. During the meeting, H Rajesh Prasad, Principal Secretary to the Government, Power Development Department, provided a detailed overview of the department’s recent accomplishments, according to an official from the Power Development Department (PDD).
The official emphasized that J&K has taken proactive measures to ensure an ample power supply, encompassing both short-term and medium-term strategies. The statement revealed, “In this direction, PPAs for 2500 MW have been signed during the current year, aiming to double the existing power availability to UT in the coming years.
The Union Minister of Power highlighted the appointment of a senior officer from the Ministry as the Nodal Officer, tasked with continuous monitoring of the power situation and addressing any deficiencies from the Central Pool to guarantee sufficient power supply to J&K. The statement underscored that smart metering was a significant topic during the meeting.
The Union Minister directed the implementing agency, RECPDCL, to swiftly execute smart metering, ensuring comprehensive solutions, including integration with MDM, enabling prepaid functionality, and incorporating other smart features. The aim is to ensure that the advantages of this technology are effectively conveyed to consumers.Additionally, the Ministry instructed CPSUs involved in the RDSS (Restructured Distribution System Strengthening) implementation to promptly award and initiate the execution of all projects entrusted to them, recognizing the transformative impact of RDSS works on J&K’s power sector.
During the discussion, LG Sinha informed the Union Minister about the persistence of outdated wires and other network elements, particularly in rural areas, causing unwarranted power interruptions.
Simultaneously, the minister urged the submission of a comprehensive proposal on this matter and assured ample funding for the revamping of the system.
