J-K Government 500-MW Power Boost Offers Hope Amidst Valley’s Energy Crisis
On Monday, H Rajesh Prasad, the Principal Secretary of the Power Development Department, addressed the ongoing power crisis in the valley, expressing optimism that the government’s decision to purchase an additional 500 MW of electricity would alleviate the situation.
Prasad emphasized that this extra power capacity would restore normalcy and bring relief to the residents, enabling the maintenance of a consistent power cut schedule. He reassured the public that with the procurement of the additional 500 MW, electricity supply would be stabilized, and the issue of load shedding would be effectively managed.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had recently sanctioned the acquisition of 500 MW of firm power from the Ministry of Power (MOP) to fulfill the base load power requirements of the region. To address the demand and supply gap during the winter months, the Administrative Council (AC) approved the initiation of a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between J&K Power Corporation Limited (JKPCL) and NTPC for the Singrauli-III project operated by NTPC.
Prasad informed that the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was imminent, stating that the formalities had been completed. He anticipated that the agreement would be finalized within a day or two, subsequently providing the valley with the additional power supply needed.Highlighting the current electricity supply situation, Prasad noted that the valley was presently receiving between 1500-1600 MWs of electricity.
With the imminent procurement of an extra 500 MWs, he expressed hope that the power situation would witness improvement.In response to the prolonged power crisis over the past two months, Prasad announced plans to launch a sustained awareness campaign across the valley.
The campaign aims to educate the public on the judicious use of electricity, utilizing various mediums to emphasize the importance of responsible power consumption.The valley has been grappling with a severe power crisis, impacting both domestic and commercial consumers.
Domestic users reported irregularities in electricity supply, while industrialists claimed significant losses, amounting to nearly 75 percent due to the power shortage.
