Instagram New Flipside Feature in Testing: A Private Space for Personal Content Sharing
Instagram, known for its Close Friends feature enabling users to restrict their posts to a select group, expanded this functionality last November. Now, the Meta-owned platform is introducing a new feature called “Flipside” to enhance user privacy. According to Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, the feature is currently undergoing testing. Flipside would empower users to create a secondary photo grid exclusively visible to designated friends, presenting itself as an alternative account alongside their primary profile. This feature enables the sharing of more personal pictures and videos with a specific group of followers.
In a Thread post on January 29, Adam Mosseri confirmed the ongoing testing of Flipside, emphasizing uncertainty about its eventual launch on Instagram. He acknowledged the dual perspectives of creating a more private space while also offering an additional means to reach a smaller audience, alongside secondary accounts and Close Friends. A social media consultant showcased the Flipside tool on Threads, describing it as a way for users to establish a private section on their Instagram pages for sharing more intimate content with a chosen subset of friends. The rollout for testing is reportedly underway among selected users.
The concept behind Flipside, as explained by the consultant, essentially turns the popular slang term “finstas” (alternate personal Instagram accounts for authentic, real-life content) into a product tailored for the Instagram audience. Adam Mosseri expressed interest in observing user responses during the testing phase and indicated a willingness to iterate based on feedback.
Notably, Flipside was initially discovered in development by developer Alessandro Paluzzi in December, with mockups shared on X. The feature, described as “a new space just for you and your friends,” allows users to share content exclusively with chosen individuals. Accessing the Flipside account involves tapping a button or swiping down on the user’s main profile. Users can customize profile pictures and bios for their Flipside, and Instagram’s community guidelines would also apply to this private space.
