Initial Probe Suggests Track Fault as Likely Cause of North East Express Derailment
In a tragic incident on Wednesday night, the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express met with a devastating accident, leading to multiple casualties and significant damage. The accident, which took place near the Raghunathpur railroad station in Buxar district, Bihar, has raised concerns about the safety of railway tracks in the region. Preliminary investigations suggest a possible fault in the tracks as the cause of the derailment.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Track Fault
A preliminary investigation report, signed by six railway officials, including the train’s driver, reveals a concerning finding. According to the report, it appears that the derailment occurred due to a fault in the tracks. This discovery raises questions about the maintenance and inspection of the railway infrastructure.
Severe Injuries and Costly Damages
The accident had severe consequences, with the loco pilot partially injured and his assistant suffering serious injuries. Tragically, four individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries. Moreover, the estimated cost of damage caused by the accident is projected to be more than ₹52 crore. This raises financial concerns for the railway authorities as they seek to address the aftermath.
Eyewitness Testimonies and Technical Insights
The preliminary report also includes vital information from eyewitnesses and technical aspects of the accident. The loco pilot revealed that the train passed Raghunathpur station at a speed of 128 km per hour, but soon after crossing the station section, it experienced a severe jolt with excessive vibration. This sudden vibration caused a drop in the brake pipe pressure, ultimately leading to the derailment at 9:52 pm. Additionally, a gateman and a pointsman at the Raghunathpur station reported seeing sparks near the wheels of the train. These insights further underscore the urgency of investigating the track conditions and ensuring the safety of railway travel in the region.
