IndiGo Faces Consolidation in Stock Price Amid Aviation Industry Challenges
IndiGo, a prominent airline company in India, has experienced a period of consolidation in its stock price following several challenges in the Indian aviation industry.
IndiGo reached its all-time high stock price of ₹2,745.95 on July 13, 2023. Since then, the stock has declined by 8% and is currently trading around ₹2,519. However, it still demonstrates a 44% increase in the past year and over 25% growth year-to-date in 2023. In 2023, the stock has delivered positive returns in 6 out of the 10 months so far, including a nearly 6% gain in October.
Concerns and Brokers’ Opinions
InCred Equities, a brokerage house, has maintained its ‘reduce’ recommendation on the stock with a target price of ₹1,600, indicating a potential downside of 38%. This decision is primarily driven by a decline in passenger load factor (PLF). The domestic industry’s PLF fell significantly in September 2023, and IndiGo’s PLF for the same period dipped as well, leading to a decrease in tariff in the July-September quarter (Q2FY24).
The decline in PLF is attributed to rising competition and the end of supernormal profits that were observed when GoAir stopped its operations. The halt of GoAir in May 2023 had previously boosted IndiGo’s performance in the first quarter of FY24. However, the history of the Indian aviation industry suggests that supernormal profits tend to be short-lived.
Varied Broker Views
While InCred Equities maintains a bearish view, UBS upgraded its target price for IndiGo to ₹3,300 from ₹2,690 earlier this year, implying an upside of over 28%. UBS sees IndiGo as well-equipped to handle challenges and grow amid rising air travel demand in India. The company’s strong balance sheet, low unit cost, and customer satisfaction, along with favorable factors in the industry, contribute to its positive outlook.
The Indian aviation industry has been grappling with various issues, including the bankruptcy of GoAir, the prolonged absence of Jet Airways, and financial difficulties at SpiceJet. Air India’s revival has also impacted the industry’s dynamics.
Please note that stock prices can be highly volatile, and investment decisions should be made with careful consideration of individual circumstances and expert advice.
