India’s Environment Minister Anticipates Critical Report on Conservation of Western Ghats
India’s Environment Minister, Bhupender Yadav, awaits a report from a newly formed committee tasked with finalizing the draft notification for delineating eco-sensitive areas (ESAs) in the Western Ghats. This biodiversity-rich region spans six states and faces threats from activities like mining and changes in land use. The committee, chaired by Sanjay Kumar, former Director General of Forest, aims to accurately define ESAs, crucial for conservation.
Western Ghats: Biodiversity Hub Under Threat
Encompassing 16,000 sq km, the Western Ghats hosts 4,000 plant species, constituting 27% of India’s flora. Threats from mining and land-use changes have led to soil erosion, impacting the region’s ecological health.
Committee’s Mission and Delay
The committee, formed in response to objections to the 2014 draft notification, is addressing concerns raised by the Kasturirangan Committee report. The delay in the final report underscores the complexity of accurately delineating ESAs in this critical region.
Government Initiatives and Global Commitment
India’s government is implementing measures like afforestation to protect ESAs in the Western Ghats. Globally, India initiated a ‘Green Fund’ at COP28 to support green initiatives worldwide, emphasizing the country’s dedication to environmental preservation. Minister Yadav highlights the Western Ghats’ pivotal role in India’s ecological well-being, underscoring the urgency of conservation efforts.
