Indian Navy Chief Assures Vigilance Against Piracy Amid Rising Maritime Challenges
Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, emphasized the Indian Navy’s commitment to protecting national interests and preventing piracy during a press briefing on Thursday. He addressed recent challenges, including drone attacks by suspected Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and the deployment of Pakistani vessels along the Indian coastline.
Admiral Kumar highlighted the Navy’s role in safeguarding Indian waters, reducing piracy incidents to almost zero until the end of the previous year. Despite a resurgence possibly linked to disruptions caused by Red Sea drone attacks, the Navy has taken action, deploying assets to counter piracy.
The Navy Chief emphasized the ongoing commitment to ensure that piracy does not occur, asserting that appropriate measures have been implemented. He also mentioned collaboration with regional partners, including smaller countries, to maintain safe and secure waters.
Regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the defense sector, Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), highlighted collaborative efforts with academic institutions to develop AI-based techniques for detecting cyber intrusions. He stressed the multifaceted applications of AI, including preventive maintenance, surveillance, and cybersecurity, in enhancing military services and actions. Kamat acknowledged the significant role of AI in improving efficiency and effectiveness in defense operations while recognizing the potential threats in cyberspace that can be countered with AI-based cybersecurity measures.
