Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team Clinches 9th Place at FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023
In an electrifying classification match at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023, the Indian junior women’s hockey team exhibited resilience and prowess, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory against the USA in sudden death following a captivating penalty shootout.
The match commenced with an intense battle that ended 2-2 in regular time, showcasing the determination of both teams.
India’s Manju Chorsiya (11′) and Sunelita Toppo (57′) contributed a goal each, while Kiersten Thomassey (27′, 53′) netted a brace for the USA.
During the tense penalty shootout, Mumtaz Khan and Rutaja Dadaso Pisal scored for India, with the latter sealing the win in sudden death.
On the USA side, Katie Dixon and Olivia Bent-Cole managed to score during the penalty shoot-out.
India demonstrated dominance from the start, maintaining relentless pressure on the USA defense. Manju Chorsiya’s (11′) goal from a penalty corner provided India with an early lead.
Despite the USA’s late penalty corner opportunity in the quarter, India held onto a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the USA’s resilient defense and Kiersten Thomassey’s (27′) precise strike saw them leveling the score at 1-1 by halftime.
The third quarter saw India persistently attacking but failing to convert their chances. The score remained unchanged at 1-1 by the end of this quarter.
The USA capitalized on an opportunity early in the fourth quarter, taking a 2-1 lead through Kiersten Thomassey’s (53′) second goal.
However, India fought back strongly, with Sunelita Toppo (57′) equalizing with a well-placed shot from a penalty corner.
With the match tied at 2-2, the teams went into penalty shootouts, where both managed to convert two shots each, extending the game into sudden death.
India’s goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo made a crucial save, allowing Rutaja Dadaso Pisal to secure India’s victory, clinching the 9th place in the tournament.
The Indian junior women’s team exhibited resilience, determination, and impressive skills throughout the match, ultimately securing a thrilling victory in a fiercely contested encounter.
