Indian Government Blocks 22 Illegal Betting Apps

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has taken action against 22 illegal betting apps and websites, including Mahadev Book Online, which is under investigation for money laundering in Chhattisgarh. These blocking orders were issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act at the recommendation of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is conducting a money laundering investigation.

ED’s Investigation and Arrests

The ED had recommended the blocking of these apps and websites in the course of its probe into Mahadev Book. The owners of Mahadev Book were arrested in August under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED claimed that the promoters of the betting app had paid bribes totaling ₹508 crore to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Additionally, the ED alleged that a significant amount of cash seized during raids was intended for the Congress party’s election expenditure.

Government’s Authority to Block Content

These blocking orders were issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, which allows the government to block online content to protect India’s sovereignty, integrity, defense, security, foreign relations, public order, or to prevent incitement to the commission of any cognizable offense related to these aspects. The move is part of the government’s effort to combat illegal betting activities online.
