India Successfully Concludes Trials for World’s First Injectable Male Contraceptive

In a groundbreaking development, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has concluded the clinical trials of the world’s first injectable male contraceptive. This novel contraceptive has shown remarkable safety and high efficacy without serious side effects. The findings of the phase-III clinical trial, which involved 303 candidates aged 25-40 years, were published in the international open-access Andrology journal last month.

Safe and Efficacious Injectable Male Contraceptive

The open-label and non-randomized multi-center hospital-based phase-III clinical trials took place at five different centers across India, including New Delhi, Udhampur, Ludhiana, Jaipur, and Kharagpur. These trials were meticulously coordinated by the ICMR, New Delhi, and received approval from the Drugs Controller General India (DCGI) as well as the institutional ethical committees of the respective centers.

    High Effectiveness and Promising Potential

During the study, 303 healthy, sexually active, married men and their wives visited family planning clinics and departments of urology or surgery for vasectomy or No Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV). The men received injections of 60 mg of Reversible Inhibition of Sperm under Guidance (RISUG). The results were impressive, with an overall efficacy of 97.3% in achieving azoospermia and a remarkable 99.02% effectiveness in pregnancy prevention, all without any significant side effects.

This male contraceptive, RISUG, represents a significant milestone in contraceptive development. According to the study, it surpasses the effectiveness of all other male and female contraceptives and is well-positioned for mass adoption.

A Modern Solution for Population Control

Given the global challenge of an ever-increasing population, there is a pressing need for modern male contraception methods. While vasectomy is effective, it has limitations that call for improved techniques. An ideal male contraceptive approach should offer minimally invasive drug delivery with a one-time injection, long-term effectiveness, minimal side effects, and the option for reversal.

RISUG fulfills these criteria and presents a potential mass-use solution as an injectable and reversible male contraceptive method. Notably, it offers localized injection and does not interact with other body systems, distinguishing it from hormonal injectable contraceptives. This milestone offers new hope for effective, safe, and convenient male contraception.
