India Deploys Three S-400 Missile Units Along China and Pakistan Borders
Indian and Russian officials are preparing to meet to discuss the delivery schedule for the remaining two S-400 air defence missile squadrons, following the operationalization of three squadrons along the borders with China and Pakistan.
Operationalized S-400 Squadrons Bolster India’s Defence
India entered into a substantial contract with Russia in 2018-19, valued at over Rs 35,000 crores, for the acquisition of five S-400 missile squadrons. Three of these squadrons have already been delivered and deployed in crucial sectors. While one unit serves both the China and Pakistan fronts, the other two are dedicated to each of these nations. This operationalization is a significant enhancement to India’s defence capabilities in the region.
Challenges in Final Delivery Schedule and the Russian Angle
The final delivery schedule for the remaining two squadrons has faced delays primarily due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Officials from both countries are gearing up for a meeting to discuss these timelines. The Russian side, however, remains somewhat unclear about the exact delivery schedule, given their engagement in the conflict with Ukraine. Reports have emerged suggesting that the squadrons originally intended for the Indian Air Force may have been utilized by the Russians for their own purposes, though this remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, India’s priority is to secure its own systems.
Meanwhile, the Indian Defence Acquisition Council has recently approved the procurement of the Indian Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile system under Project Kusha, following clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security. Collaborating with the DRDO, the Indian Air Force is working on expediting the delivery schedule for the LR-SAM, a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile defence system with the capability to engage enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges of approximately 400 kilometers. This system will complement existing air defence systems, including the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), which is already operational.
