Income-Tax Raids Uncover Over Rs 200 Crore in Cash at Odisha Distillery
Uncovering Rs 250 Crore: Income Tax Raids on Odisha Distillery Group Reveal Massive Unaccounted Cash
In a significant development, the income-tax department’s ongoing searches targeting an Odisha-based distillery group and its affiliations have unearthed unaccounted cash estimated at around Rs 250 crore.
Initiated on Wednesday against Boudh Distillery Private Limited, the raids have already recovered over Rs 200 crore, with expectations that the total retrieval could reach Rs 250 crore, according to official sources.
To facilitate the counting process, the tax department has deployed three dozen machines, albeit progress is slow due to their limited capacity.
Notably, premises linked to Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand, Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, were also covered during these extensive searches.
Efforts to seek a response from the distillery group proved unfruitful, as an email sent by PTI on Thursday received no reply.
The recovered cash, primarily found stashed in almirahs, amounted to Rs 200 crore from a location in Balangir district. The remaining funds were discovered in various other locations, including Sambalpur, Sundargarh in Odisha, Bokaro, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Kolkata.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to share a news report on the recovery, linking it to a business group allegedly associated with Sahu.
In his post, he underscored the need for accountability, stating, “Every penny looted from people will have to be returned. This is Modi’s guarantee,” accompanied by several emojis.
Despite attempts, Mr. Sahu’s staff were unable to obtain a comment from the MP when contacted for a reaction to the income-tax department’s action.
The sources indicated that the taxman acted on “inputs” regarding a substantial amount of cash being remitted by liquor distributors, sellers, and business groups, prompting the launch of these raids.
