Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed Lok Sabha on Friday that approximately six crore hospital admissions, amounting to a total expenditure of Rs 77,298 crore, have been authorized under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) until November 30.
The scheme, recognized as the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance program, aims to provide an annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore families.
As of December 2, a total of 26,774 hospitals, including 11,733 private facilities, have been empanelled nationwide to deliver healthcare services to AB PM-JAY beneficiaries.
Within the financial years 2020-21 and 2023-24, 4.98 crore claims have been submitted as of November 30.
The scheme, catering to the bottom 40% of the population, operates on a budget of Rs 7,200 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24.
Minister Mandaviya highlighted that AB PM-JAY boasts approximately six crore hospital admissions with a total expenditure of Rs 77,298 crore as of November 30, 2023.
AB PM-JAY distinguishes itself as a completely cashless and paperless scheme with no reimbursement concept.
Beneficiaries access treatment through defined packages, and healthcare providers are compensated based on specified benefit packages with standardized rates.
The scheme covers a comprehensive range of 1,949 procedures across 27 specialties, including treatments for cancer, diabetes, and heart ailments.
While leprosy is not included, AB PM-JAY encompasses 26 procedures for skin diseases and 549 procedures for cancer.
Additionally, to prevent beneficiaries from being denied care for non-package procedures, an unspecified package has been incorporated.
Minister Mandaviya highlighted that as of December 2, 2023, approximately 34.92 lakh hospital admissions worth Rs 6,537 crore and 1.68 lakh hospital admissions worth Rs 254 crore have been authorized for cancer-related and skin-related treatments, respectively.
