Imran Khan Faces Setback as Asad Umar Resigns, Leaving a Void in Political Circles
Asad Umar Parts Ways with PTI: A Decade-Long Political Journey Comes to an End
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) former secretary-general, Asad Umar, who resigned from his post in May amid the aftermath of the May 9 riots, has taken a decisive step by announcing his resignation from PTI’s basic membership and bidding farewell to politics altogether, as reported by Dawn News on Saturday.
In a press conference held on May 24, Umar had already expressed his condemnation of the May 9 events but refrained from signaling any affiliation with another political party. Today, he declared, “After more than one decade in public life, I have decided to completely quit politics. I am resigning from the basic membership of PTI.” Umar, known for being a close aide of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, emphasized his dissent from the party’s policy of confrontation with state institutions, a stance that has caused a significant rift and led to numerous resignations within the party.
The Exodus Continues: Umar’s Resignation Amidst Nationwide Crackdown on PTI
Umar’s decision to step away from PTI follows a growing trend of political figures leaving the party in the wake of a nationwide crackdown initiated against PTI. Hundreds of party leaders faced arrests after the May 9 riots, contributing to an atmosphere of discontent within the political landscape.
Expressing gratitude in his announcement, Umar acknowledged those who supported him throughout his political journey, specifically thanking the “NA-54 team and the voters who elected me twice.” He reflected on his efforts to serve the constituency, expressing a hope for Allah’s blessings upon the Pakistani nation.
Policy Disagreements and State Institutions: Umar’s Justification for Departure
Reiterating his stance on the policy of confrontation with state institutions, Umar highlighted the detrimental impact of such a strategy on the nation’s well-being. Dawn News reported his words, stating, “Such a policy has led to a serious collision with state institutions, which is not in the interest of the country.” As Umar bids farewell to PTI and political life, his departure signifies a deeper ideological divide within the party.
