IAF Unveils New Ensign at 91st Air Force Day Celebrations
In a historic moment at the 91st Indian Air Force (IAF) Day celebrations in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari unveiled a new ensign for the IAF. This significant change replaces the existing ensign that has been in use for over seven decades. The new ensign prominently features the IAF crest in the top right corner, marking a momentous day in the history of the IAF.
A Symbolic Transition from the Past
The existing ensign, adopted in 1950, was a replacement for the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) ensign, which bore the Union Jack and the RIAF roundel. The new ensign signifies a shift away from colonial symbolism, aligning the IAF with its proud Indian heritage. Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari emphasized the importance of this transition, urging the IAF to be the change it aspires to see.
The Symbolism of the New IAF Ensign
The IAF crest, now a prominent feature, embodies the values and identity of the Indian Air Force. At the top, the national symbol, the Ashoka lion, stands tall, with the words ‘Satyameva Jayate’ in Devanagari below it. Just below, a Himalayan eagle, wings spread wide, symbolizes the IAF’s fighting spirit. Encircling the eagle is a light blue ring, bearing the words ‘Bhartiya Vayu Sena.’ The IAF’s motto, ‘touch the sky with the glory,’ inscribed in Devanagari, completes the crest. This motto, drawn from the Bhagavad Gita, signifies the IAF’s mission to soar to new heights with excellence.
The IAF’s transition to this new ensign is a reflection of its commitment to its identity, values, and mission. It marks a significant milestone in the history of the Indian Air Force, underlining its continued evolution and dedication to serving the nation. The Air Force Day parade, once held at the Hindon airbase near Delhi, has now traveled beyond the national capital, showcasing the IAF’s reach and prominence.
