IAF Deploys Helicopters for Tamil-Nadu Flood Relief
In response to severe flooding in southern Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. Utilizing Medium Lift Helicopters (MLH) and Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv, the IAF is conducting rescue missions and supply drops in the affected areas.
Operating from Madurai and collaborating with civil authorities, the IAF helicopters have rescued several individuals, including a pregnant woman and a one-and-a-half-year-old infant. Acknowledging the critical situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin urgently appealed to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for additional helicopter support in the flood-affected southern districts.
CM Stalin highlighted the unprecedented rainfall, affecting around 40 lakh people in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, particularly Srivaikuntam and Tuticorin towns. Roads are inundated, hindering relief material distribution, making helicopter assistance crucial for reaching affected regions.
Stressing the gravity of the disaster, CM Stalin requested immediate deployment of more helicopters for rescue and relief operations. Presently, the IAF, Navy, and Coast Guard have collectively deployed eight helicopters for rescue missions and distributing essential supplies.
Simultaneously, the Indian Army concluded a rescue operation in Nanalkadu, evacuating 111 individuals and is moving towards Srivaikuntam to aid around 250 stranded people. The joint efforts of various armed forces and civil authorities aim to mitigate the dire situation caused by the floods in Tamil Nadu’s southern regions.
