High-Level Committee Submits Report on One Nation One Election

The High-Level Committee on ‘One Nation One Election,’ chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The report, comprising 18,626 pages, resulted from extensive consultations over 191 days since its constitution on September 2, 2023.

    Recommendations for Simultaneous Elections

The committee recommended a three-tier simultaneous election for panchayats, assembly, and Parliament. In the case of a hung assembly, fresh elections and a curtailed term were suggested. The introduction of Article 324A was proposed to enable simultaneous elections in panchayats and municipalities with general elections. The panel emphasized synchronizing Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections across all States to reduce the frequency of polls throughout the country.

    Public Consultation and Legal Framework

The High-Level Committee initiated a consultation process under Kovind’s chairmanship and sought public opinion on ‘One Nation, One Election.’ The central government had constituted the committee to examine this issue and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections. The core idea behind this initiative is to restore the practice of synchronized elections to streamline the electoral process in India.
