High-Level Committee Initiates Consultations for Simultaneous Elections in India
The High-Level Committee (HLC), led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, has commenced consultations for implementing simultaneous elections across India. The committee met with key figures, including former Chief Justices and the ex-Chief Election Commissioner, to gather insights. The consultation process involves engaging citizens, political parties, constitutional experts, and former Chief Election Commissioners. A public notice has been issued to invite suggestions for legal and administrative changes necessary for simultaneous elections. The HLC’s objective is to establish a framework for concurrent elections, addressing constitutional amendments, electoral law modifications, and logistical preparations. The initiative faces opposition from the ruling DMK, citing concerns about federal principles, equal opportunities, increased expenditure, and infrastructure challenges.
