Hemant Soren Appears Before Special Court in Ranchi Amid Arrest Controversy
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was presented before a special court in Ranchi following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam. Soren, accompanied by ED officials, appeared at the PMLA Court and has also moved the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest. The court hearing cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) will be addressed by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday.
Arrest Amid Political Drama and Resignation Drama
Soren’s arrest unfolded amid political drama, with his party leaders making a late-night representation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan for the appointment of JMM’s Champai Soren as the new Chief Minister. Visuals showed Soren smiling and waving as he arrived at the court building. The ED had questioned him for over seven hours at his residence in Ranchi, and he reportedly refused to sign his arrest memo until he submitted his resignation to the Governor. To avoid becoming the first sitting Chief Minister to be arrested, Soren’s resignation was accepted, and he was then formally arrested by the ED.
Legal Challenges and Supreme Court Appeal
Soren has moved the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest, withdrawing his original plea filed in the Jharkhand High Court. The plea before the apex court will be heard by a three-member bench, addressing the circumstances surrounding the arrest in connection with the alleged land scam.
