Habba-Kadal Bridge Redesigned for Smart-City Appeal: A Transformative Journey from Heritage to Modernity
The historic Habba Kadal Bridge, commissioned by Sultan Habib Shah in 1500 CE, stands as a silent witness to the unfolding epochs in Kashmir from the year 1500 CE to the present day, 2023. Reflecting the changing focus of smart city initiatives towards downtown areas, the Jammu and Kashmir government is currently in the process of redesigning this iconic structure, drawing inspiration from the Zero Bridge in Srinagar. As part of the smart city’s Downtown Urban Renewal plan, the ambitious project aims to enhance the bridge’s features within a timeframe of eight months.
Mushtaq Ahmad, the head carpenter overseeing the project, expressed confidence in the team’s dedicated efforts over the past six months. He stated, “With our ongoing work, I am optimistic that we will successfully complete the construction of this magnificent bridge within the next two months.”
The transformed Habba Kadal Bridge is envisioned as a public space with restricted vehicular access. The plans include the incorporation of proper seating arrangements, gazebos, ambient lighting, and wood-based fencing to evoke a heritage aesthetic. Additionally, the bridge will host two coffee shops, offering comfort and convenience to visitors.

Explaining the vision behind the project, Ahmad mentioned, “The objective is to create a welcoming space for people to sit, relax, and even hold meetings on the bridge, deviating from the traditional shop fronts.”
Officials foresee the revitalized bridge becoming a prominent tourist destination, drawing visitors from various states and countries who seek to experience the enchanting allure of Kashmir. It is poised to become a significant tourist spot in the heart of Shehri Khaas, Srinagar. Local shopkeepers express optimism, believing that the bridge’s transformation will not only generate business opportunities but also play a role in addressing the unemployment challenges that have persisted in the Habba Kadal area of Srinagar due to years of unrest. Ghulam Mohammed, a local shopkeeper, remarked, “The revitalization of the bridge is expected to bring positive economic impact and contribute to bridging the unemployment gap that has persisted for years in the Habba Kadal area.”
