Guwahati’s Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Registers Impressive Growth in Passenger Traffic
Guwahati’s Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport reported a significant surge in passenger traffic, handling approximately 5.6 million travelers in 2023. According to the Guwahati Airport Authority, this figure comprised around 2.9 million arriving passengers and 2.7 million departing passengers, marking a notable increase from the 4.6 million passengers recorded in 2022.
Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer (CAO), expressed satisfaction with the remarkable 17% growth achieved in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s numbers by 10 lakh passengers. Baruah highlighted the airport’s ability to manage such volume with a terminal functioning at less than half of its passenger handling capacity. He eagerly anticipated the commissioning of the new terminal, which boasts double the current capacity, aligning with the increasing demand for air travel.
The year 2023 witnessed Guwahati Airport handling approximately 46,600 aircraft movements, with roughly 23,300 arrivals and an equivalent number of departures. This marked a notable increase from the 41,000 aircraft movements observed in 2022.
Notably, new domestic flight connections to Jaipur and Bhubaneswar were introduced in 2023, along with the only new international route to Bangkok. Additionally, the highest daily passenger count reached a peak of 19,290 on December 24, 2023, emphasizing the airport’s growing popularity and the rising demand for air travel in the region.
Amidst this success, Guwahati Airport Authority revealed plans to expand further by adding more domestic and international destinations to its roster, building on the positive growth momentum experienced in 2023.
