In a significant development, the Gurez sector of Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir has been connected to the electricity grid for the first time since India’s independence. This milestone ends the sector’s long-standing reliance on diesel generator sets for electricity, marking a new era of development and convenience for the residents.
Announcement by Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited
The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) made this landmark announcement, expressing their excitement over the achievement. The successful charging of the 33kV Line and Receiving Station (RSTN) Dawar, despite the challenging terrain, has been highlighted as a remarkable accomplishment by KPDCL.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s Statement
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha described this event as a historic day for the Gurez Valley. He emphasized the significance of this development, particularly for an area that often gets cut off due to heavy snowfall during winter months. The Lieutenant Governor also noted that efforts are ongoing to connect all the villages in Gurez to the grid in a phased manner.
Benefit to the Local Community
The grid connectivity is set to benefit approximately 1,500 consumers across various Panchayats in the Gurez Valley. This development represents a major improvement in the quality of life for the residents, providing them with a more reliable and efficient source of electricity.
