More than 50 foreign skiers from various countries faced a perilous situation near the Army Ridge in Gulmarg when an avalanche struck the area around 1 pm. Amidst this disaster, the timely and courageous actions of the ski patrol teams of Jammu and Kashmir tourism department emerged as the saving grace for many.

Swift Rescue Operations Amidst Tragedy

As the avalanche unfolded, claiming the life of one Russian skier and injuring another, the ski patrol teams and local police sprang into action. A commendable rescue effort ensued, resulting in the successful extraction of at least six individuals, including a local guide, from the snow-covered danger zones. The ski patrol’s dedication was later acknowledged by top officers, emphasizing the crucial role they played in mitigating the impact of the tragedy.

Avalanche Triggers Concern for Future Safety

While the avalanche didn’t disrupt the Khelo India Winter Games, skiing at the upper ridges of Gulmarg was put on hold the following day. Officials highlighted the potential threat of more avalanches due to snow depth ranging from five to 15 feet at various slopes. In response, ski patrol teams proactively triggered controlled avalanches at vulnerable spots to enhance skiing safety.

Communication Saves Lives: A Heroic Effort

Mehraj ud din Dar, a senior officer of the ski patrol team, emphasized the significance of timely communication during the crisis. With around 50 skiers from different nations engrossed in skiing when the avalanche struck, the primary focus was on informing and guiding them away from danger. “The timely communication managed to secure their lives as we asked them to remain in their area until the slopes were secured. We rescued all of them safely,” shared Dar.

In addition to the immediate response, ski patrol members, along with foreign experts and other skiers, contributed to the rescue operations. The collaborative efforts and swift actions proved instrumental in saving lives amidst challenging conditions.

Vigilance at High Altitudes: Ski Patrol’s Crucial Role

During the skiing season, ski patrols stationed at an altitude of 3,500 meters play a pivotal role in search and rescue operations. Overlooking the entire Pir Panjal range, these dedicated teams endure extreme temperatures to keep a watchful eye on vulnerable spots on Gulmarg slopes. With a foreign expert overseeing the patrol team, their efforts contribute significantly to maintaining safety for the approximately 300 to 400 skiers who flock to the picturesque Gulmarg meadows daily.

In conclusion, the Gulmarg avalanche serves as a testament to the bravery and dedication of ski patrol teams, whose unwavering commitment to safety saved numerous lives on that fateful day.
