Accusations Surface Against Sub Divisional Magistrate
In a recent incident in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a government official has been removed from his position after a video of a man allegedly being subjected to humiliation inside his office went viral. Udit Pawar, the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Mirganj town in Bareilly district, is facing allegations of instructing a man to ‘crouch like a chicken’ during his visit to the office, which was related to a request for a cremation ground.
The Denial and Counterallegations
Mr. Pawar has vehemently denied these charges, asserting that the man was already in a crouched position when he entered the office. According to him, he merely inquired about the unusual posture and directed others present to assist the man in getting back on his feet.
District Magistrate’s Verdict
However, the District Magistrate conducted an initial investigation and concluded that the SDM was at fault in this incident. Consequently, Mr. Pawar has been relieved of his post and has not been assigned a new posting as of yet.
The Victim’s Perspective
The victim, identified as Pappu, narrated his version of events, claiming that he and others from his village went to the SDM’s office to discuss their demand for a cremation ground. Instead, they were subjected to humiliation, with the SDM instructing Pappu to ‘crouch like a chicken.’ When Pappu questioned this treatment, he alleges that he was verbally abused. He mentioned that he had visited the office multiple times in search of justice and that he would continue to crouch until he received it.
The villagers have submitted a complaint letter highlighting the absence of a cremation ground in Mandanpur village, where both Hindus and Muslims reside. They allege that the land designated for a cremation ground has been taken over by some members of the Muslim community in the name of a cemetery. This situation has left them struggling to perform last rites and, therefore, they called on the district administration to arrange for a crematorium.
In his defense, the SDM explained that he found five to six individuals from the village in his office, and one of them had assumed the crouched position upon his arrival. He insisted that he merely inquired about this behavior and tried to resolve the issue. In light of the video evidence and the results of the investigation, Bareilly’s District Magistrate, Shivkant Dwivedi, promptly took action by removing Mr. Pawar from his post and appointing a new officer to the position.
