General Elections in Pakistan Scheduled for February 11, 2024
Islamabad, Pakistan – After prolonged demands for an election date, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced that the general elections will take place on February 11, 2024. This decision comes after multiple appeals and legal proceedings calling for timely elections to ensure a smooth transition of power in the country.
The date was disclosed during a hearing at the Supreme Court by the ECP’s lawyer, Sajeel Swati, who also shared that the process of drawing constituencies would be finalized by January 29, making way for the polls. The announcement was made during the second hearing on the matter, presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Athar Minallah, and Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan.
The Road to the General Elections in Pakistan
The political landscape in Pakistan has been marked by uncertainty since Imran Khan’s government was ousted via a vote of no confidence in April 2022. Subsequently, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government dissolved the National Assembly on August 9, with the early dissolution of Sindh and Balochistan assemblies. These steps were taken to enable the ECP to hold elections within 90 days, as per the constitutional requirement.
However, the ECP faced a dilemma as the Council of Common Interest (CCI) approved the 7th Population and Housing Census for 2023, compelling the commission to conduct elections based on new delimitations. This led to the announcement of a new schedule for delimitations in accordance with the CCI-approved census data.
Challenges and Expectations for the General Elections
With the general elections now slated for February 11, 2024, Pakistan is entering a crucial phase of its democratic journey. The country anticipates a fair and transparent electoral process, ensuring that the voice of the people is effectively represented in the government. The announcement provides clarity and a timeline for political parties and citizens to prepare for the upcoming elections.
