Fish Production in Kashmir Raises Concerns Amidst Severe Dry Spell
Amidst the current harsh and dry winter conditions in the Kashmir Valley, concerns have been raised by experts regarding the potential impact on the region’s fish production.
The absence of customary rain or snow has created an unusual scenario, disrupting the delicate equilibrium of water bodies and posing a potential threat to the well-being of fish, according to experts. Despite these worries, the fisheries department remains optimistic, citing a consistent increase in production over the past four years, with expectations of further growth in the upcoming season.
Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed Khan, Chief Proctor at Kashmir University and Ichthyologist, highlighted the observable effects of the dry spell on fish in Kashmir. He explained that the reduction in water levels compels fish to move out of their usual habitats, emphasizing that during winter, fish typically inhabit lower water zones where temperatures are comparatively higher. The decrease in water depth disrupts the temperature stratification zone, unsettling the comfort of the fish.
Dr. Khan further elaborated on the importance of water flow for oxygen exchange and nutrient supply from the catchment area. In dry weather, the absence of water from the catchment area negatively impacts the fish, particularly during the breeding season. He emphasized that harming a single fish during this critical period could have far-reaching consequences, potentially affecting hundreds of fish.
The natural fish breeding season in Kashmir typically occurs in February and March. The ongoing dry spell is expected to impact both fish breeding and production due to reduced water levels, disrupting the specific breeding grounds of fish.
Contrary to concerns raised by experts, a representative from the Fisheries Department reassured the public. According to the official, fish production in Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a significant surge in the past four years and is poised for further growth in the upcoming season.
Providing statistics to support their claim, the official stated that fish production in Kashmir has witnessed a substantial increase of 5840 tons, generating revenue of 366.12 lakhs during this period. Specifically, the production of trout has shown remarkable growth, rising from 598 tons in 2019 to 1990 tons during the financial year 2022-23. To boost fish productivity, the department has been importing fish seed from foreign countries. Additionally, efforts have been made to establish Trout Rearing Units in the private sector, with 1144 units set up, and 56% (611 units) established in the last four years, aiming to create employment opportunities for the youth.
