Farmers Unite for Delhi Chalo March: Demanding Agricultural Reforms
In an unprecedented display of unity, over 200 farmers’ unions, including Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have launched the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. Originating from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, thousands of farmers are en route to Delhi, pressing for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops and addressing various agricultural concerns. The march, scheduled for February 13, has prompted security measures, including Section 144 imposition and internet service suspension in seven districts.
Journey Highlights and Farmer Demands
Thousands of farmers, accompanied by around 2,500 tractor trolleys, commenced their journey from Punjab’s Sangrur district to Delhi via Haryana. Despite discussions with Union ministers, the farmers persist in their demands, which include MSP assurance, total debt waiver, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. Delhi Police has responded with a ban on large gatherings, tractor entry restrictions, and enhanced border security measures.
Security Measures and Traffic Restrictions
In anticipation of potential unrest, Delhi and Haryana authorities have implemented various measures. Section 144 has been enforced, borders secured with barricades and barbed wires, and travel advisories issued. The Delhi Police and Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) are actively deployed at the Delhi-Haryana border to prevent disruptions. Restrictions encompass assembly prohibitions, weapon carriage, and transport of disruptive items, with traffic advisories for diversions and restrictions.
Critical Juncture for Agricultural Reform
The farmers’ march signifies a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for agricultural reform in India. As developments unfold, the world observes the response of the Indian government to farmers’ demands and the potential impact on the nation’s agricultural landscape.
Key Points: Farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march demands MSP assurance, total debt waiver, and justice for Lakhimpur Kheri victims. Security measures include Section 144 imposition, barricades, and internet service suspension. Delhi Police and CAPF actively secure the Delhi-Haryana border to manage potential unrest.
