Farmers Demand MSP Guarantee Law
In a fervent plea to the government, the leader coordinating the massive farmers’ protest urged, “You can kill us, but please don’t oppress the farmers.” The call for justice echoed as he appealed to the Prime Minister, urging swift action to quell the protest by enacting a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers.
Paramilitary Presence Raises Concerns
Amidst the protest, concerns heightened as the leader claimed the deployment of paramilitary personnel in Haryana villages to impede the farmers’ march. Expressing dismay, he stated, “The country will not forgive such a government.” The deployment of forces in Haryana villages prompted questions about the farmers’ alleged crimes, reminding the government that they had elected the Prime Minister with hopes of protection and justice.
Peaceful Protest Amidst Rising Tensions
Despite escalating tensions, the leader promised a peaceful protest, emphasizing their efforts to engage with the government through meetings. Asserting the need for the Prime Minister to acknowledge their demands, he highlighted the relatively modest financial implications of their requests. The call for dismantling barriers and allowing peaceful progress towards Delhi underscored their determination to make their voices heard.
Farmers’ Resilience at Shambhu Border
The protest’s resurgence became imminent as farmers, numbering over 14,000 with 1,200 tractors, gathered at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border. Rejecting the government’s proposal on procuring essential crops, the farmers were resolute in resuming the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement. Armed with bulldozers and heavy machinery, they adapted their equipment to counteract potential police interventions, employing gas masks to navigate tear gas attacks.
As the farmers readied for the march, the police were equally prepared, fortifying barricades with concrete, iron barbed wires, and shipping containers. The deployment of 8,000 personnel at Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders highlighted the intensity of the standoff. The looming question remains: will the government heed the farmers’ plea for a MSP guarantee law and address the core issues fueling this protest?
