Farmers and Government to Hold Fourth Round of Talks Amidst Protest
As the farmers’ agitation at the Punjab-Haryana border continues, both farmer leaders and the government are gearing up for a crucial fourth round of talks on Sunday. The primary focus remains on resolving the deadlock concerning the farmers’ demands, particularly the insistence on a law ensuring a minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Scheduled for 6 pm in Chandigarh, the meeting will involve key Union ministers, namely Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal, and Nityanand Rai. While earlier rounds have led to agreements on various issues, three critical demands are yet to find resolution, heightening anticipation for a breakthrough after Sunday’s discussions.
Farmers’ Demands Extend Beyond MSP Law
Apart from pushing for a legislation guaranteeing MSP, the protesting farmers en route to Delhi have a comprehensive set of demands. These include the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, a call for loan waivers, pension provisions for farmers and farm labourers, and the withdrawal of police cases against them. Rakesh Tikait, a leader from Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), announced protests in multiple states to underscore these demands, emphasizing the need for collective action to address the agricultural sector’s challenges.
Cautious Peace Maintained Ahead of Talks
In a notable development, the farmers, in their last meeting three days ago, agreed to maintain peace during the ongoing protests and committed to further discussions scheduled for Sunday. This commitment has resulted in a period without reported confrontations between the protesting farmers and security personnel. The situation remains tense yet controlled, setting the stage for a pivotal round of talks that could shape the trajectory of the farmers’ agitation and the government’s response.
Stay tuned for updates on this critical meeting that holds significance for both the agitating farmers and the government.
