Extreme Cold Grips Kashmir: Srinagar Hits Season’s Coldest Night, Schools Extend Winter Break
Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, marked the coldest night of the season as temperatures plummeted to -5.6°C. Other areas in Kashmir, including Pahalgam at -6.4°C, also experienced sub-zero temperatures. Due to the extreme cold wave conditions, the winter vacation for schools in the summer zone of Jammu has been extended until January 12. The meteorological department predicts mostly dry weather until January 14.
As the cold wave persists in Kashmir, Srinagar recorded its coldest night of the season at -5.6°C on Friday night, according to meteorological department officials. All weather stations in Kashmir registered sub-zero temperatures during Saturday night.
On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, Srinagar experienced freezing temperatures at -5.4°C, about 3.5 notches below normal. However, the day temperature rose to 12.3°C, six degrees above the normal temperature.
Pahalgam, a popular tourist resort, emerged as the coldest place in Kashmir with a night temperature of -6.4°C. Meanwhile, the Konibal area in the south and Pahalgam tourist resort recorded 6°C. The ski resort of Gulmarg in the north recorded a temperature of -4.5°C.
In South Kashmir, Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of -4.6°C, while the southern area of Kokernag observed a minimum of -2.9°C. In North Kashmir, Kupwara recorded a low of -5.4°C.
Kashmir’s harshest winter period, ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ commenced on December 21 with temperatures dropping significantly. Although the upper reaches received some snow, major snowfall is yet to occur. Following a deficit in precipitation in December, meteorologists expect no significant snowfall in the Himalayan region until mid-January.
The meteorological department anticipates mostly dry weather until January 14. On January 9, there is a possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches. The three stages of Kashmir’s winter include an intense 40-day period with most of the snowfall, followed by 20 days of less intense chill, and a final 10 days of mild cold.
In response to the extreme cold wave conditions, the government of Jammu and Kashmir extended the winter vacations of government and private schools in the summer zone of Jammu until January 12. Teaching staff are expected to resume duties from January 8, with classes for Class 10 to 12 conducted online during the extended vacation period.
The meteorological department’s spokesperson mentioned that generally dry weather is expected until January 14, with a possibility of light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches on January 9. Additionally, moderate to dense fog over the plains of Jammu is expected in the next two days.
