Ex-J-K Chief Urges Unity Against Terrorism After Retired Officer’s Killing
Expressing deep condemnation for the killing of a retired senior police officer in Baramulla, former Jammu-Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad called upon all political parties to unite in the collective effort against terrorism.
In an interview with ANI, the founder-chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party emphasized the critical necessity for political parties to set aside their differences and collaborate in combating terror in the Union Territory.
Highlighting the absence of such incidents in Kashmir over the past six to seven months, Azad expressed concern about the resurgence of targeted killings. He urged both the central government and political parties to transcend their disagreements and join forces for a decisive battle against terrorism.
The recent incident involved unidentified terrorists opening fire at retired police officer Mohd Shafi while he was offering prayers at a mosque in Gantmulla, Baramulla district. Jammu and Kashmir Police identified the slain former police officer as Mohd Shafi, stating that the attack occurred during his prayer at the mosque.
In response to the tragedy, National Conference patriarch and MP Farooq Abdullah asserted that terrorism cannot be eradicated solely through security force operations. He stressed the need for exploring alternative approaches to address the root causes of terrorism.
Abdulkareem Mir, the younger brother of the deceased retired police officer, mourned the loss and provided details about the incident. Shafi, a retired senior superintendent of police (SSP) since 2012, was a regular attendee at the mosque for the ‘Aazan.’ Mir described the sudden interruption in Shafi’s call to prayer, initially attributed to a malfunctioning microphone, only to later discover the shocking reality that he had been fatally shot.
