Elon Musk’s xAI Makes Grok-1 Open Source

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) venture, xAI, has made its large language model (LLM) Grok-1 available in open source on March 17. The announcement was made last week on Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), revealing that the AI chatbot will now be accessible to researchers and developers.

Open Release of Grok-1

In a blog post, xAI declared the release of Grok-1’s base model weights and network architecture. Grok-1, a 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, has been provided under the Apache 2.0 licence, granting interested individuals access to the AI model via GitHub.

Commercial Usage and Redistribution

Under the Apache 2.0 licence, developers have the freedom to utilize, modify, and distribute Grok-1 for commercial purposes. This licensing allows for extensive customization and potential commercialization of the AI, enabling developers to build upon the original code while acknowledging any modifications made.

But while Grok-1 is now available for public use, it’s worth noting that the released version dates back to October 2023, before it was trained using data from X. This means developers will need to procure the data themselves to access the unique personality of the Grok chatbot.

Advanced Parameter Size

Grok-1 boasts a parameter size of 314 billion, surpassing other LLMs like Meta LLaMa 2 or Mistral 8x7B. The larger parameter size allows for a broader context window, enabling the AI to provide more contextually accurate and comprehensive responses.

Grok’s Evolution

Originally unveiled on November 3, 2023, Grok was introduced as a chatbot designed to compete with industry leaders. Initially available to a limited user base with X Premium+ subscriptions, Musk hinted at plans for a standalone app for Grok in the future.
