The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to meet with various political parties in Jammu and Kashmir on August 10 to gather feedback on conducting the long-awaited Assembly elections in the Union Territory.
The chief electoral officer of Jammu and Kashmir issued invitations to the political parties on Tuesday, with specific time slots allocated for their meetings with the Election Commission.
Led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, the commission will visit Jammu and Kashmir from August 8-10 to assess the Union Territory’s preparedness for the elections. This visit comes as the Supreme Court’s September 30 deadline for holding the elections approaches.
During the visit, the commission will review the situation with key officials, including the chief electoral officer, central forces coordinator, and police superintendents from all districts.
Additionally, the commission will meet with enforcement agencies in Jammu on August 10 and hold a press conference to brief the media on its findings.
This will be the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which led to the reorganization of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories.
Following a delimitation exercise, the number of Assembly seats in the region has increased from 83 to 90, excluding those allocated to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In preparation for the elections, the EC has recently ordered the transfer of officers posted in their home districts, a common practice before polls to ensure impartiality.
This move further indicates that the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are imminent.
