Election Commission of Pakistan Issues Advisory Ahead of 2024 General Elections
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released an advisory in anticipation of the 2024 general elections, instructing government employees to refrain from engaging in political activities.
The advisory, issued on Tuesday, specifically bars government officials from participating in election-related tasks and mandates that officials seeking leave must obtain permission from the relevant Returning Officers (ROs) or District Returning Officers (DROs).
For federal government employees, those up to Grade 19 can seek leave approval from DROs, while Grade-20 officers and above must directly obtain permission from the commission.
Additionally, the ECP has imposed strict guidelines concerning canvassing materials such as banners, posters, handbills, and wall chalking, strictly prohibiting any size of wall chalking and showcasing government officials in any campaign-related publicity material.
The advisory also warns printing presses of severe legal consequences if they fail to adhere to the guidelines.
Furthermore, it directs all provinces and the federal capital territory on the prescribed sizes and other specifications for campaign materials.
Both the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration and the provinces have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with these directives, emphasizing that any violation will result in legal action.
Moreover, the ECP stressed the avoidance of printing holy Quranic verses, sayings of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), or sacred scriptures from other religions on campaign materials, highlighting such actions as illegal practices.
This advisory comes as a measure to maintain the sanctity of the election process, regulating political canvassing and ensuring a fair and unbiased electoral environment as Pakistan gears up for its upcoming general elections in 2024.
