Election Commission Gears Up for Assembly Polls in Five States

As the Election Commission prepares to announce the schedule for assembly polls in five states, a significant meeting of its observers has been convened to ensure the smooth conduct of these democratic exercises. The day-long meeting brings together Election Commission’s police, general, and expenditure observers with the primary goal of devising a strategy that guarantees effective implementation of the model code and prevents the influence of money and muscle power from disrupting the level playing field.

    Ensuring a Fair Electoral Process

The Election Commission is committed to ensuring that the upcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Mizoram, and Rajasthan are conducted without any hindrances. To achieve this, the Commission has undertaken a comprehensive assessment of poll readiness in Rajasthan, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, with its visit to Telangana concluding on Thursday.

    Imminent Announcement of Election Schedule

It is anticipated that the Election Commission will soon announce the election dates for these five states, with the assembly polls slated for November-December. In Mizoram, the term of the legislative assembly ends on December 17 this year, with the Mizo National Front currently in power. Meanwhile, the terms of the legislative assemblies of Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh expire on different dates in January next year.

    Political Landscape in the States

As these states prepare for elections, it’s worth noting that Telangana is governed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Madhya Pradesh is ruled by the BJP, and Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan have Congress governments.
