In the ongoing investigation of the alleged ration scam in West Bengal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made another significant arrest. Following the apprehension of Trinamool Congress minister Jyotipriya Mullick, the agency has now detained former Bongaon municipality chairman Shankar Adhya in connection with the case.

The recent arrest was accompanied by an unsettling incident. An ED team, alongside Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers, encountered a violent mob in Sandeshkhali, purportedly supporters of Trinamool leader Shah Jahan Sheikh. The mob, wielding weapons like lathis, stones, and bricks, attacked the officials, intending severe harm.

Confirming the assault, the ED released a statement detailing the attack as an attempt to cause fatalities. Adhya, the apprehended Trinamool leader, has been moved to the ED’s regional headquarters in Kolkata, with plans for medical examination before presenting him to court.

The aftermath of this incident prompted the state Governor, CV Anand, to summon top Bengal officials for a discussion. Governor Anand condemned the barbaric attack, stressing the government’s obligation to curb such vandalism in a democracy.

This violent episode has further exacerbated tensions between the Mamata Banerjee-led government and the central agency, ED. Opposition parties, consistently critical of ED’s perceived bias, have called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe, as advocated by Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar in a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah.

Suvendu Adhukari, Bengal’s Leader of Opposition, targeted Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of facilitating lawlessness in the state. He specifically pointed fingers at Shah Jahan Sheikh and claimed Banerjee’s alleged encouragement of criminals like Sheikh led to the establishment of a terrorized environment.

The harrowing attack on the ED officials necessitated their escape by abandoning vehicles, resorting to autorickshaws and two-wheelers to reach safety.
