The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is anticipated to unveil the timetable for the forthcoming general elections, scheduled for February 8, 2024, within the next couple of days, sources revealed to ARY News. All preparations for the elections, including the appointment of Returning Officers (ROs), have been completed by the Election Commission.

Reports indicate that the ECP has imposed a ban on the appointment and transfer of Deputy Commissioners (DCs) while indicating the issuance of the election schedule imminently. Sources noted that the commission has finalized a draft schedule and conducted consultations in preparation for its formal release.

The proposed draft schedule outlined the collection of nomination papers from candidates during the second week of December 2023, with scrutiny anticipated to be completed by the third week of December, as per ARY News.

Addressing speculations about a potential delay, the ECP spokesperson refuted claims and emphasized that the general elections would proceed as scheduled. Denouncing media reports suggesting otherwise, the spokesperson revealed that the commission took action against certain media outlets for disseminating false information, approaching the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

Earlier agreements between Pakistan President Arif Alvi and the Election Commission had set the date for the general elections on February 8 next year, Dawn reported. Additionally, the Finance Division released PKR 17.4 billion on December 5 to facilitate the ECP in making necessary arrangements for the upcoming polls, thereby dispelling rumors of potential delays, as reported by Geo News.

In prior developments, the ECP had previously released the final list of constituency delimitations for the national and four provincial assemblies in November, marking significant progress in the electoral preparation process.
