The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed the removal of an “objectionable post” by BJP Karnataka on a social media platform, following a complaint from the Congress party. The post, which featured an animated video targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, was deemed provocative.

    Key Highlights:

    1. ECI Intervention: Despite legal action and a complaint to the ECI, BJP Karnataka did not remove the contentious post. The ECI has now directed the microblogging website to take it down immediately.
    2. Congress Complaint: The Congress party filed a complaint, alleging that the post aimed to incite violence and promote hostility. Despite the Chief Electoral Officer’s order, the post remained on BJP Karnataka’s handle.
    3. Legal Action: In response to the complaint, the High Grounds police in Bengaluru filed a case against BJP leaders JP Nadda, Amit Malviya, and BY Vijayendra under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The incident comes amidst ongoing Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, with voting for 14 seats underway today. The state witnessed a significant victory for BJP in the 2019 elections, winning 25 out of 28 seats, while Congress and JD-S managed only one seat each.
