Dual Earthquakes Strike Afghanistan; Western Japan Grapples with Catastrophic Quakes

Afghanistan’s Fayzabad encountered seismic activity on January 3, witnessing two earthquakes as confirmed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The initial quake, registering a magnitude of 4.4 and located 126 km east of Fayzabad, struck at 00:28:52 IST at a depth of 80 km. Soon after, a second earthquake of magnitude 4.8 hit at 00:55:55 IST, situated 100 km east-southeast of Fayzabad, with a depth of 140 km.

Despite the seismic events, Afghanistan reported no property damage.

However, in Western Japan, a series of powerful earthquakes ravaged the region, resulting in a devastating toll of at least 57 lives lost and widespread destruction. Officials had forewarned of potential subsequent seismic activity after a significant magnitude 7.6 quake struck Ishikawa prefecture on January 2. The area continued to experience aftershocks, hindering immediate damage assessment.

The calamity caused extensive damage, with tens of thousands of homes succumbing to destruction, leaving essential services like water, power, and cell phone connectivity disrupted in certain areas. The affected residents grappled with uncertainty and despair over their futures, dealing with the aftermath’s challenges.

The situation in Japan remained dire, portraying the profound impact of the earthquake aftermath on the lives and stability of affected individuals.
