The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar witnessed a surge of emotion and protest today as doctors and medical students rallied against the brutal rape and murder of a fellow doctor from Kolkata.

This tragedy has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with the medical community from Kashmir to Kanyakumari demanding justice and enhanced security for healthcare professionals.

The protest at GMC Srinagar was marked by a strong turnout of students and faculty. Participants carried placards with messages such as “Justice for Our Sister,” “Safety for Doctors,” and “End Violence Against Women.”

Interns and students marched with solemn resolve, voicing their demand for immediate action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

A student from GMC Srinagar expressed profound grief, stating, “We are here not just as doctors but as human beings, deeply hurt by this senseless violence. This incident is an attack on the dignity and safety of women everywhere.

We urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate and bring those responsible to justice.” The protest also highlighted concerns over the safety of doctors, particularly women, who often work long hours in challenging conditions.

Participants also called for more stringent laws and a safer working environment for all healthcare workers. Similar protests have been reported at medical colleges and institutions across India following the Kolkata incident.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urged nationwide solidarity and immediate government action to protect doctors.

In Srinagar, the protest concluded with a silent vigil in memory of the deceased doctor, with many participants seen in quiet prayer.
