Diabetes Epidemic Unveiled: A Stark Reality Disclosed at IPH Seminar
In a shocking revelation made during a recent seminar organized by the Institute of Public Health (IPH) on World Diabetes Day, experts sounded the alarm on the escalating crisis of diabetes in Pakistan. The seminar aimed to raise public awareness and encourage collaborative efforts among medical professionals to address the increasing prevalence of diabetes.
Diabetes’ Grim Toll: A Public Health Crisis Unveiled
Dr. Mehreen Farooqi, a prominent speaker at the event, highlighted a sobering statistic: a staggering 35% of premature deaths in Pakistan are linked to diabetes. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Farooqi stressed the importance of regular blood screenings, particularly for individuals above the age of 35. Early detection, she argued, is crucial for implementing effective preventive measures against diabetes and its associated complications.
32 Million Affected: The Pervasive Reach of Diabetes in Pakistan
During the seminar, IPH Dean Professor Dr. Zarfashan Tahir underscored the magnitude of the problem, revealing that a staggering 32 million Pakistanis are currently grappling with diabetes. This revelation, he explained, serves as a significant precursor to other life-threatening conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, renal failure, and blindness.
Dr. Shafa Ali, a distinguished expert in the field, highlighted the significance of daily exercise in mitigating the risks of diabetes. Remarkably, Dr. Ali suggested that even taking a modest 500 steps daily could substantially reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Mahnaz Nasir Khan emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in daily habits, advocating for an approach where individuals eat to live, not live to eat.
The seminar concluded with a symbolic walk involving IPH Dean, faculty members, doctors, and students. Additionally, a nutrition camp provided free sugar tests, blood pressure checks, and weight assessments, offering practical insights into the prevention, management, and necessary measures for diabetes.
