Delhi’s Winter Power Demand Set to Break Records, Green Energy to Play Key Role

Delhi is gearing up for a record-breaking winter in terms of power demand, with expectations to exceed 5,700 MW. Officials from power distribution companies, including BSES, anticipate this peak demand to surpass last year’s winter record of 5,526 MW.

Green Power to Meet Significant Demand

A noteworthy aspect of this year’s power management strategy is the reliance on green energy. BSES officials stated that up to 60% of the maximum winter power demand, which is over 3,600 MW in their areas, will be fulfilled using green power sources. This includes a mix of solar power, hydropower, wind power, waste-to-energy conversion, and rooftop solar facilities spread across south, west, east, and central Delhi.

    Preparedness of Power Distribution Companies

BSES discoms are prepared to ensure reliable power supply for their nearly 50 lakh consumers, which amounts to around two crore residents. Their strategy involves long-term agreements with power plants and banking on surplus power from other states. The expected peak power demand in BSES’s BRPL and BYPL areas could exceed 2,400 MW and 1,200 MW, respectively.

Focus on Clean and Sustainable Energy

The use of clean energy sources like solar, hydropower, and wind power, totaling over 2,000 MW, highlights Delhi’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly power solutions. This approach not only addresses the high demand but also aligns with broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy.
