Delhi’s Air Quality Remains ‘Very Poor’

Delhi’s air quality remained under the ‘very poor’ category for the fourth consecutive day, extending into the third straight day this week. The Air Quality Index (AQI) for the city was recorded at 336 on Wednesday morning. The pollution levels have caused discomfort for residents, particularly those engaged in outdoor activities like morning walks.

    Concerns Over Breathing Comfort

Morning walkers have expressed their concerns about breathing difficulties due to the pollution. They find it more uncomfortable compared to the summer months. Congestion and discomfort are increasingly becoming issues, leading individuals to take extra precautions.

    Specific Air Quality Readings

In areas such as Delhi University, Pusa, IIT Delhi, Airport (T3), and Mathura Road, the air quality was categorized as ‘very poor’ with AQI readings between 311 and 362. Noida recorded an AQI of 391, also considered ‘very poor’, while Gurugram reported an AQI of 323.

    Air Quality Index (AQI) Explained

The AQI provides a simplified way to communicate air quality, condensing data from various pollutants into a single number, a descriptor, and color code. It helps the public understand air quality at a glance. The index ranges from 0 to 500, with lower values signifying better air quality. AQI values from 0 to 100 are considered good, while values between 100 and 200 are moderate. An AQI from 200 to 300 is considered poor, and an AQI from 300 to 400 is ‘very poor.’ When the AQI exceeds 400, it is classified as ‘severe.’

    Pollution Mitigation Efforts

The Delhi government has been implementing a 15-point winter action plan to combat pollution, targeting issues related to vehicles, biomass burning, dust, and more. One of the initiatives launched to address pollution from vehicles is the ‘Red Light on, Gaadi off’ campaign, which encourages drivers to switch off their engines while waiting at traffic signals.
